Embark on a respectful, self-guided day trip from Krakow to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum—an unforgettable journey into one of history’s darkest chapters. This experience offers insight into the atrocities committed during World War II, while allowing you to explore the site at your own pace.
The Auschwitz-Birkenau complex, established in 1940 by Nazi Germany, became the largest and most notorious of the concentration and extermination camps. Over its five years of operation, it witnessed the systematic murder of over one million people—primarily Jews, but also Poles, Roma, Soviet POWs, and others.
Founded in 1947, the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum preserves the grounds and buildings of both Auschwitz I in Oświęcim and Auschwitz II-Birkenau in Brzezinka. Together, they comprise of over 150 buildings and 300 ruins. Many original features remain intact, including roads, fences, watchtowers, and railway ramps. Inside former prison blocks, powerful exhibitions display authentic artifacts and documents.
Your self-guided tour includes access to:
-
Auschwitz I – the main administrative center of the camp, featuring exhibitions in original brick prison blocks
-
Auschwitz II-Birkenau – the vast extermination site built for mass murder, including gas chambers, crematoria, and barracks
While no guide narration is provided, informative displays throughout the site detail the timeline, personal stories, and horrifying logistics of the Holocaust. Take time to walk thoughtfully, reflect deeply, and pay tribute to the memory of the victims in this somber and sacred space.
