Full Day Tour to Murano, Burano, including Glass Museum, Wine Tasting, Torcello & San Francesco

Explore a side of Venice that visitors rarely get to see on this excursion to Murano and Burano by private boat. This day trip to five of Venice’s smaller islands take you deep into the history and culture of the Lagoon with visits to lace and glass museums, a guided tour of the Monastery of San Francesco, a walking tour of Torcello and a visit/wine tasting at a secret, island winery.

Your experience starts a 9:00am when you meet your local guide and small group of no more than 20 travelers at the Campo Santi Apostoli, then head to the Fondamenta Nove to board your private boat. As you are motoring out through the Lagoon, your guide will point out places of interest and give you a brief introduction to the history of island settlement in Venice.

Your first stop is the monastery on the Island of San Francesco del Deserto, where you will literally walk in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi as one of the friars shows you around the beautiful gardens.

Hopping back on your boat, you will zip over to Burano, whose brightly colored houses have been the home of Venice’s legendary lace makers since the 16th century. After a self-guided visit inside the lace museum, pop over to the island of Mazzorbo and into a secret vineyard to taste a unique style of wine that has been produced there since the 14th century.

Lunch is not included, but the guide will show you a few of their favorite places in Burano. Because the island isn’t very touristy, the restaurants all serve you local specialties at great prices. After lunch, you will zip over to the island of Torcello, the first island in the lagoon to be inhabited and home to Venice’s oldest church. Your guide will give you a brief tour before giving you some free time to explore. We highly recommend that you go to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and do the dome climb.

Finally, head to Murano, home of Europe’s most respected glass-makers since the 13th century. Here, you will visit the glass museum to see jaw-dropping examples of this traditional Venetian art before enjoying more free time to explore the island. If you want to see glass-making in action or buy a piece, your guide can also recommend an artisanal glass factory to visit. After your free time, your boat will be waiting to take you back to the main island of Venice by 5:00pm.

Venice’s smaller islands are some of its most charming and historically rich; a day visiting them is the perfect antidote for people looking to escape the crowds and take a deep dive into the history and culture of the Maritime Republic.
