This unforgettable helicopter flight takes you to stunning White Island/Whakaari, New Zealand’s only active marine volcano. 

The full Maori name for the island is ‘Te Puia o Whakaari’ which means literally ‘the Dramatic Volcano’ and as you will discover, it certainly lives up to its name!  From Rotorua, you will travel by helicopter 48km off shore to White Island, enjoying amazing views over the Bay of Plenty.  You will fly east over dense forests, sparkling lakes and the rugged landscape of the volcanic fault line. 

Your helicopter will then land for about an hour giving you the opportunity to trek to the steaming crater through a rocky landscape of boiling fissures, bubbling mud and crystalised sulphur.  Temperatures as high as 800 degrees C have been recorded on the island by scientists and volcanologists, as well as several minor eruptions, but although the constant rumblings and steam escaping from vents around you can be disconcerting, this does not mean that the island is about to blow up.  You will also pass the corroded remains of a historic sulphur mine, an eerie remnant of a previous attempt to capitalise on the properties of this unique landscape. 

Enjoy panoramic sea views on your return flight and watch for dolphins, whales and fish on the surface of the water below.
