Tofino is about 200 miles from Victoria, an approximate four hour drive, on the west coast of Vancouver Island.
From mid spring grey whales begin their annual migration passing right by Tofino, which is minutes from the Pacific Rim National Park, a most prized nature reserve.
Tofino is a fascinating area not just for nature, but also for local art. It gets very busy with tourists so pre-booking tours is a must.
We didn't only see whales on our whale watching cruise, but seals, sea otters and an amazing bald eagle kept us entertained as well. My 8 year old was a bit green around the gills as the boat bobbed around so would not recommend it for tots. Keep the camera handy as a picture of the fantastic tails or even of a whale breaching are common place.
We also did the Bear Watching Cruise and was lucky enough to see a mother and baby black bear on a rocky beach of a waterway, searching for crunchy crabs, clams and barnacles. Again keep the camera handy and make sure the zoom works, although the knowledgeable guide gets you as close as possible without scaring the bears away.
