Explore this amazing underground world on a fully guided tour of the Waitomo Caves, including a visit through the breathtaking starry wonderland of the Glow Worm Grotto.- 45 minute guided tour of the caves.
- Boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto.
- Entertaining and informative commentary throughout your tour
Your tour takes you through the upper entrance of the caves through a narrow passsge to the Tomo, a 16m deep limestone shaft which was carved by an ancient waterfall. The Tomo links the upper level of the caves to the Waitomo River which flows below in the lower level. You will walk to the lower area through over 250m of chambers and passages filled with ornate rock formations and sculptures, and amazing examples of stalactites and stalagmites which have been built up over thousands of years by limestone deposits. The lower level is home to the vast Cathedral Chamber, the largest in the caves, reaching 18m. The cavern is known for its amazing acoustics and purity of sound, prompting many singers and choirs to perform here, including New Zealand’s own opera diva, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
The highlight of your tour will undoubtedly be the feeling of awe as your boat is pulled along the Waitomo River through the giant Glow Worm Grotto. Thousands of glow worms emitting their iridescent light reflect off the water around you and decorate the cavern roof above you, and it is only the calming sound of dripping water which reminds you that you are far underground and not admiring the night sky in this surreal experience. Your visit to Waitomo Caves will leave you with a true sense of relaxation and serenity.
