Most people have heard of Florence’s famous Ponte Vecchio, but few will have noticed the corridor that passes above it. The private passageway dates back to the height of the Renaissance and was commissioned by the Grand Duke of Florence, Cosimo I de’Medici, who did not like walking among the people of Florence. Constructed by Giorgio Vasari the secret path allowed him to walk freely from Palazzo Pitti on the left bank of the Arno to Palazzo della Signoria on the right bank. Hidden between the city houses, the corridor goes on for almost a mile and is considered one of the architectural masterpieces of the Renaissance. It leads from the Uffizi, over the Ponte Vecchio, in between houses and even through the church, Santa Felicità! In the middle of Ponte Vecchio the corridor is characterized by a series of panoramic windows facing the Arno, in direction of the Ponte Santa Trinita. Not only does the corridor offer magnificent views over the city from its round windows, the passageway contains over 1000 17th and 18th century paintings including an important collection of self-portraits by some of the most famous masters of painting of the 16th to the 20th century.
This exclusive tour allows you to follow in the footsteps of the Medici’s and can only be visited by small groups accompanied by expert guides. Before you visit the Vasari Corridor, there is a chance to visit the impressive Uffizi Gallery, one of the oldest and most famous museum in the world. Enjoy fast track entrance to the museum and a guided visit of all the masterpieces including works by Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Giotto, Cimabue and Masaccio.
