This tour only visits art and craft workshops and retail shops with a high standard of work ensuring you get the chance to by quality goods and get a real flavour for the amazing skill of the craftsmen that produce the intricate and detailed Balinese souvenirs.
The first stop of the day is the village of Celuk, renowned for its gold and silver works. Many of the skilled artisans are surprisingly young boys who create exquisite pieces in gold and silver with delicate filigree work. Continue to Mas Village, famous for its intricate woodcarving. Visit the village workshops and marvel as the hugely talented woodcarvers fashion a variety of items from ebony and other hardwoods. Tools used remain fairly basic and include axes, mallets and dozens of different small chisels, the finished carving is often polished with shoe shine.
The final visit of the day takes you to Ubud, locally recognized as the artistic heart of Bali. Many local and European painters have settled in this village and there is a large number of galleries and shops displaying their paintings and sculptures. There is plenty of free time to explore the shops and you will also have the chance to visit Neka Museum. Here you will find both ancient paintings and works by contemporary artists and the museum also provides and excellent overview of the stylistic differences between local artists.
