Overview

This hike takes you to the verdant valleys nestling beneath North Africa’s highest peak, Jbel Toubkal (4167m).  You will come across quaint Berber villages, witness awesome vistas and experience the peace and tranquility of the open country, a wonderful contrast to the city.

Day One: You will be collected from your accommodation in Marrakech at about 9.00am for an exhilarating 1.5 hr drive south over the gorges and high passes of the Tizi n’Techt road to the town of Imlil (1740m), known as Morocco’s “Little Chamonix”.  There are a number of trails starting here and you will set out some 4km in the shadow of the jagged peaks of the Toubkal Massif, passing a number of Berber hamlets until you arrive at the striking village of Aroumd where each house is seemingly built upon another as it juts out over ancient irrigated terraced fields of fruit trees and vegetables.  Another equally-quaint village, Sidi Chamharouch, awaits you, a further 8km up the valley beside a waterfall and stream, again with its homes built chaotically on top of each other!  The village, a place of pilgrimage for devout Moslems (the shrine is forbidden to non-Moslems) and said to be a relic of a pre-Islamic religious cult, is where you will stop for a picnic lunch.  As you rest and eat, you will be afforded memorable views of mighty Jbel Toubkal.  The final part of the first day’s journey is a trek down the other side of the Valley back to Imlil for dinner and overnight accommodation in the Gite d’etape.

Day Two: After breakfast you will set out towards the east, up winding mule tracks to the Tizi n’ Tamatert pass (2269m) to enjoy the amazing panorama and get a sense of scale and scope to the majestic Atlas peaks that surround you.  A picnic lunch is taken at the next stop which is a high pass called the Tizi n’ Ouaneskra (2100m) overlooking Jbel Oukaimeden and the beautiful encircled plateau.  This is just one of numerous occasions when you will be reaching for the camera!  Refreshed, you will set through several Berber hamlets and high passes, providing a remarkable insight to a life which seems a million miles from home.  The hike ends at the end of a series of winding mule tracks in the village of Aguersioual, where your ride back to busy Marrakech awaits.
