Overview

Many people only associate Mauritius with idyllic white sand beaches fringed by turquoise blue waters. However, in the picturesque and unspoilt south of the island, you can find a host of contrasting natural wonders that are well worth a visit. The impressive Trou aux Cerfs is an extinct volcanic crater that sits nearly 600 metres above sea-level and the crater itself is eighty metres deep. Here you will be rewarded with some magnificent views across the island.  Continue to Grand Bassin to view its sacred lake. Nestling in a volcanic crater, Grand Bassin is wonderfully serene and legend suggests that its waters communicate with the holy waters of the River Ganges in India.

At Chamarel, you will discover two natural wonders – the magnificent Chamerel Falls that plummet hundreds of feet down a cliff face and the coloured earths of Chamarel. This natural phenomenon was created when volcanic rocks cooled at different temperatures to form beautiful patterns of colour on the exposed hillsides. Afterwards, head to the Black River Gorges national park where you will find truly breathtaking views and much of the remaining indigenous forests of Mauritius.  For lunch you will be taken to the Domaine Saint Denis – a hunting lodge above Black River Gorges set amidst lush vegetation with panoramic views and an enticing table d’hôte menu. In the afternoon you will visit the Mauritius Glass Gallery and see the original method of recycling glass before heading to the Casela Nature & Leisure Park for the final visit of the day. The reserve spreads over eight hectares and is home to more than 140 varieties of birds from the five continents.
