The tour starts at the Esquilino Square with a visit of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major dating back to the 5th century A.D. with its beautiful mosaics and the relic of the Crib of the Infant Jesus. Next is the visit of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome, built under Constantine and renovated by Borromini in the XVII c. It contains numerous columns and precious marbles, many taken from the Colosseum. The Holy Staircase supposed to be the staircase of Pilate’s residence which Christ descended after His condemnation. It has been brought from Jerusalem to Rome by Saint Helena, mother of Constantine. The Catacombs, the ancient underground cemeteries of the early Christians’ faith, cover a length of 120 Km. After touring through these amazing subterranean tombs, head on to the Apian Way, built in 312 B.C., and finish off in the chapel of Domine Quo Vadis, the legendary place of the apparition of Christ to Saint Peter.
