Overview

First stop on this tour is a visit to the Nesjavellir power plant which is set in a geothermal area in the picturesque landscape of Lake Thingvallavatn, and is a renewable energy source that services more than half of Reykjavik’s power requirements. (Note: due to weather and road conditions it may not be possible to visit Nesjavellir during winter).

You will then visit Thingvellir, where the Icelandic parliament was founded in 930 AD and therefore the world’s oldest functioning parliament. It is also the spot where the slowly diverging tectonic plates of Europe and North America meet, and has recently been added to UNESCO’s world heritage list.

The tour carries onto take you to see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, before viewing Geysir – a hot spring erupting from below the Earth’s crust. This is thought to be the oldest known geyser and one of the best examples of this phenomenon in the world. Eruptions here can throw hot water up to 60 meters into the air but can be infrequent, however nearby is the Strokkur geyser which is a much more reliable source of eruptions, usually propelling hot water into the air every 5 to 10 minutes.

On the way back to Reykjavik you will visit the horticultural ‘green house’ town of Hveragerdi where you will learn how geothermal energy has been harnessed, and visit the Skálholt church which is the ancient seat of the Icelandic Bishops.
