Overview

This full day walking tour takes in Stewart Island’s beautiful, windswept coastline and the site of early Maori and European settlements.  Starting with a 40 minute water taxi ride along the coast to Port William, this is an exceptional way to get to know the island’s history, learn about its fascinating plant and bird life and appreciate its stunning scenery.

You may see seals, birds and other marine life as you travel through the waves and then land at Port William, once the location of an early Maori settlement, then a sealing depot and sawmill factory but now abandoned.  Your guide will illustrate the hardships that would have been encountered being so far from the mainland, and show you relics of the old sawmilling era.

From Port William, you will head toward Maori Beach along a superb, high coastal path and enjoy views over the Foveaux Strait and glimpses of the South Island’s snow capped mountains.  Your guide will introduce you to the area’s bird and forest life – you may see the tomtits, fantails, bellbird and tui that are widespread on this part of the island.

Once at Maori Beach, enjoy a rest and lunch before setting off again to the picturesque Little River and Lee Bay.  A 30 minute break at Lee Bay gives you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the enchanting views to Stewart Island’s highest mountain (981m), the beautiful Mount Anglem.  If the tide is very low, your guide will take you along the beach to explore the rockpools before you continue back to Horseshoe Bay.
