According to legend, Sevilla was founded by Hercules and its origins are linked with the Tartessian civilisation. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya by the Moors who ruled the city for 800 years. The Moorish influence is evident in much of the beautiful architecture, such as Plaza Espana and the Giralda Tower, but you will also find one of Europe’s largest Gothic cathedrals and numerous churches. The district of Santa Cruz is characterised by beautiful Orange trees.
Your day starts when you board the AVE in Madrid for a leisurely train journey to Seville. Please note there are two different itineraries in Seville depending on the day of the week you travel.
Classic Seville - Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
The itinerary starts with a visit to Plaza de Espana, one of Seville's most easily recognised buildings and the finest example the Moorish Revival in Spanish architecture. Then see gothic Seville Cathedral built on the site of a mosque and the Giralda tower at its heart. Continue to Torre del Oro, the main surviving portion of the Alcazar palace and another beautiful example of Moorish architecture. The tower also houses the fascinating Naval Museum. In the Santa Cruz neighborhood where you will see plenty of orange tree squares, flowered balconies and richly decorated facades. You will then have some time free to explore Seville before making your own way back to the station for your return journey to Madrid.
Historic Seville - Wednesday and Friday
Your tour of Seville starts with Plaza de America (Mudejar Pavilion) and Reales Alcazares with their beautiful yards, mosaics, wooden sculptures and marvelous gardens. Continue to the Santa Cruz neighborhood where you will see plenty of orange tree squares and flowered courts. You will then have some time free to explore Seville before making your own way back to the station for your return journey to Madrid.
