This thrilling, full day 4WD safari will take you to the heart of the beautiful New Zealand high country which surrounds Queenstown visiting many of the areas used for filming on Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films. 

 

This tour gives you the opportunity to get off road and see the varied landscapes that have come to represent the ‘Middle Earth’ of JRR Tolkien’s incredible imagination.  Not only a 4WD safari for Lord of the Rings fans, this tour is for anyone who can appreciate the natural beauty of New Zealand’s rugged and diverse scenery.  Much of the area around Queenstown is largely uninhabited, unspoilt and inaccessible by many vehicles, and these are the areas you will be visiting on your tour. 

 

You will visit two separate areas on your tour, the Wakatipu area and the Glenorchy area.  In the Wakatipu area you will pan for gold at the ‘Ford of Bruinen’ in the old goldmining town of Arrowtown, see the ‘Misty Mountains’ locally known as The Remarkables, visit the site of ‘The Pillars of the Kings’ on the turquoise Kawarau River which was also used in the trilogy when filming the ‘River Anduin’, and travel the ‘Road to Mordor’ along Skipper’s Canyon. 

 

The amazing areas around Glenorchy, in particular the Dart River bowl and Paradise provided the backdrops for ‘Lothlorien’,  the battle site at ‘Amon Hen’ and ‘Isengard’.  These are not film sets, they are simply areas of outstanding natural beauty with an entirely natural sense of grandeur and magic.  Your trip to New Zealand would not be complete without a visit to this stunning and unspoilt landscape.
