Gourmet picnic lunch
This is a great trip for those who have limited time or don’t want to walk the whole picturesque 71km trail but do want to get a snapshot into some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in the world.
You’ll start by taking a boat cruise from Picton, past salmon farms and sea birds on a beautiful voyage to Ship Cove, a historic and scenic reserve that Captain Cook visited several times in the 17th Century. From there, you’ll walk 14km (approx. 5 hours) along what is generally considered the premier section of the Queen Charlotte track.
You’ll pass through lush coastal forest and there are some fantastic views across the Marlborough Sounds – a spectacular network of sunken river valleys, where the land has slowly sunk and the water level has risen, flooding a vast area over millions of years. At one of the viewing areas, you’ll stop for a gourmet picnic lunch before continuing on to meet the boat and return back to Picton.

A wind breaker, thick socks and comfortable walking shows are recommended.
The walk is only of moderate difficulty so only a basic level of fitness is required.
