Although not the capital of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City is certainly the largest and most developed. Discover a city full of contrasts; French colonial architecture competes with Chinese influences and traditional street vendors selling fruits and vegetables can be seen next to modern western-style bars and flashy boutiques. The city is divided into 8 different districts, with most relevant sites located at the centre or District One.
Your morning starts with a visit to the Reunification or Presidential Palace. Here on April 30th 1975 the ‘American War’ officially ended when tank number 843 of the North Vietnamese Army crashed through the gates of what was, at the time the residence of the President of the Republic of Vietnam. Continue to the War Remnants Museum unravelling the country’s turbulent past and the brutality of the war. A portfolio of black and white photographs can be found on display dedicated to both foreign and Vietnamese journalists and photographers who perished during the conflict. Some of the artefacts exhibited are donated by returned US servicemen adding to the reconciliatory tone of the museum.
Head to Cholong which very much retains its connections to the past and where dozens of elegant temples and pagodas can be found along with some fine French colonial buildings. Here, you will visit the Notre Dame Cathedral, one of the best examples of classic French colonial architecture and where every single stone used to build it has amazingly travelled from France! You will also have the chance to see the countries largest post office, another fine example of French Colonial architecture, before heading to the renown Pho 200 nearby the Ben Thanh Market for a tasty Vietnamese meal.
In the afternoon you will head towards Ho Chi Minh City’s oldest pagoda dating back to 1744 and one of the finest in Vietnam. On your visit to Giac Lam Pagoda, you will also get to see the impressive Tree of Wandering Souls where people pray for their sick relatives by writing the names of their love ones on slips of paper and then attaching them to the tree. Continue to Thien Hau Temple devoted to the Goddess of Mothers and Newborn Babies, the most attractive feature is the roof packed with figurines. The tour concludes with a visit to the vibrant atmosphere of Ben Than Market. Here you can find a wide selection of goods ranging from fake Nike trainers to beautiful silk Ao Dais.
