Pamukkale (Cotton Castle) is a magical and spectacular natural site situated by the ruins of sacred Hierapolis ancient city. This unique phenomenon is a fairyland of dazzling white petrified castles. The stunning white calcium pools, which cling to the side of a ridge, have been long one of the most famous picture postal card views of Turkey.
Calcium rich thermal spring waters running off the plateau’s edge for millions of years have created the fantastic formation of stalactites, cataracts and basins – a white wonderland. Here you can relax in the hot springs that have been used since Roman times for their therapeutic powers or swim in the modern pools filled with warm, soothing thermal waters.
The ruins of Hierapolis are the other main attraction. The city was founded in 190 B.C. by Eumenes II, king of Pergamon. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, it reached the height of its development as a Roman thermal bath centre. Hierapolis has extensive ruins including the city walls, the octagonal Martyrium of St. Philip, Temple of Apollo, basilica, and the necropolis which contains some of the best examples of tomb styles and is one of the best-preserved cemeteries in all of Anatolia.
The journey time from Marmaris to Pumukkale is around 4 hours. Along the route, stop at a Carpet Weaving Center for a short break and a chance to see traditional carpet weaving and also enjoy lunch before arriving in Pamukkale.
