Its an early pick up from your Cairns hotel for the Barrier Reef excursion. The bus came for us about 07.10am so don't party too hard the night before.
The morning was grey, with a bit of rain in the air, which I did not expect, still take the sun block with you though, if this is the case.
The catamaran was lovely and very comfortable but full, so book before you go.
It was apparent that the weather was unusual and the trip out to the Outer Reef was choppy, to say the least. I skipped morning tea for this reason, but alot of people didn't.
When we got out to the reef the water was still grey and not the turquoise I had expected, and again this is unusual.
The team of snorkellers and dive instructors on board are great. They gave everyone wet suits, snorkells and masks and were very patient with first timers.
We were all taken into the water in small groups and although grey, once you were in an snorkelling, what you saw was fantastic and the guides were on hand for your 'Nemo' and Shark questions.
Lunch was laid out and as people came in and dried off, started to eat. Everyone was very hungry by this time. It was very rough on the way back and the staff were great with those that were having trouble finding their sea legs, especailly after a large lunch.
I still managed a tan, despite being over cast so do be careful and take a hat.
I loved the trip, the underwater sea life was fantastic, but would hope to do it again when the sky was blue and the sea the gorgeous colour I expected.

The Catamaran is huge, comfortable and full, so book before you go. It was apparent that the weather was unusual and the trip to the outer reef was choppy to say the least. Lunch was huge and you could graze as much as you liked. I kept thinking about the rough sea going back so held back but lots didn't and the staff were again excellent with those that had trouble finding their sea legs. Afternoon tea helped settle everyone though.
I still managed a tan despite being overcast so do be careful and take a hat.
I loved the trip despite the weather and would certainly do it again, but this time when the sky and sea is clear.
