After a pick-up from your hotel, head to the National History Museum at Mahebourg for a fascinating insight into many aspects of the Mauritian heritage. Housed in an old French country house, the exhibits guide you through different phrases in Mauritian history and separate rooms have been dedicated to the Dutch, French and the British periods. There is also the chance to see some of the objects recovered from shipwrecks along the Mauritian coast, like the bell of the St. Géran which sank back in 1744. From here you then take a short sea crossing to Ile aux Aigrettes, a spectacular and beautiful nature reserve. This island is a safe haven to many endangered species including the Pink Pigeon, a cousin of the dodo. Here you can learn about the local conservation efforts and after a guided tour of the reserve the tour returns to the mainland.
Continue to the La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes, a lush tropical forest home to over 2,000 Nile crocodiles and the world’s largest captive breeding ground for the giant Aldabra tortoise. You will also discover the largest collection of insects in the Indian Ocean. After a delicious lunch in a local restaurant, take a scenic drive through Paradise Valley and enjoy the wonderful views of rich flora and fauna. The tour concludes with a visit to the Rountree Encampment at Bel Air and the chance to see the estate’s famous water garden.
