Overview

Lamphun was originally known as Haripuncha and is considered one of the oldest, if not the oldest city in Thailand and predates Chang Mai by several hundred years. According to legend, this ancient fortified city was founded by Buddhist monks in 660AD - although this is disputed and others say it was founded closer to 950AD. Little remains of Lamphun's ancient city walls, though the heart of the Old City is still surrounded to the north, west and south by well-preserved moats.

Your tour to this fascinating city takes you to two of her finest temples.  The twelfth century temple of Wat Phra That Haripunchai is the largest Wat in Northern Thailand and the complex contains two beautiful old chedi's in the original Haripunchai style. The tallest chedi is 150 feet high and is topped by a nine-tier umbrella made of 14lb of gold. The tour then continues to Wat Chamadevi which dates back to around the 10th century. This temple is one of the finest examples of Dvaravati architecture and was built by the Mons. The main pagoda has five levels, each containing twelve standing Buddhas. The top of Pagoda was once covered with gold but this has since disappeared, hence the temple’s popular name Wat Ku Kut (Topless Pagoda). Afterwards, there is the chance to explore one of the city’s local markets before commencing the return journey to Chiang Mai.
