Kiwi Encounter is a project where kiwis are hatched, nurtured and released back into their natural habitat as part of New Zealand conservation program ‘Operation Nest Egg’.  In a wonderful setting of native bush at Rainbow Springs, your informative guide will take you around the four different areas – the Hatchery and Nursery, the Nocturnal Area which has no barriers between you and the kiwis, the Outdoor Enclosure, and the Kiwi Culture Exhibit where you will discover more about both the fascinating kiwi and ‘kiwiana’.

Your visit to Kiwi Encounter gives you the rare opportunity to see this charming bird at all stages, from new born chick to the much-loved adult that has become the national emblem of New Zealand.  Children will especially love the hatchery and you will enjoy the opportunity to stroll through the open plan nocturnal area where you can observe adult kiwis before their release into the wild.  Kiwi Encounter is devoted to bringing the flightless kiwi back from the brink of extinction and your visit will help with this ongoing project, as well as providing a fantastic highlight of your visit to the area.
