Overview
Discover some of the amazing frozen sites around Banff once explored by legendary Englishman Bill Peyto in 1886. This three hour hike along a frozen creek takes you into Grotto Canyon, passing striking rock formations and frozen ice falls. At it’s narrowest point, the canyon nearly blocks out the sky and it is here that you find ancient rock art that dates over a thousand years. No previous hiking experience is necessary and you will be accompanied by a local guide who will be happy to answer questions on the natural history and geology of the mountains.
Once you are inside the canyon the temperature drops abruptly, so dress warm; preferably in ski wear, including hats and warm boots. It is a good idea to bring a change of socks and an extra pair of shoes in case your feet get wet.
