In August 2005 New Orleans was torn apart by Hurricane Katrina in what was to become the USA’s worst natural disaster. On this tour you will learn about the events before and after Katrina from the perspective of a local, and also see how the city is being restored and rebuilt to better cope with the perennial threat of hurricanes.
New Orleans is a port city set on the Mississippi River and you will learn why it was built at this particular location, its importance as a cargo gateway to the rest of the USA and a little about the French history of the city. Your guide will then give you a “local’s” chronology of events in the days leading up to Katrina and the days immediately after and you will see an actual levee that was breached and learn why the levee system failed so catastrophically.
The tour will take you through neighbourhoods that were devastated such as Lakeview, Gentilly and St. Bernard, and you will see how they are being rebuilt and the city as a whole is being restored to its former beauty.
Tour is narrated by local New Orleanians with their own personal accounts of Hurricane Katrina.
