The tour starts with a spectacular drive through the Hajar Mountains via the oases of Fanjah and Birkat Al Mauz, to reach Nizwa and the impressive 17th century fort. Located roughly 175 kilometres from Muscat, Nizwa is the birthplace of Islam in the Sultanate of Oman and widely regarded as the historical and heritage capital of the country. It is also renowned for its gold and silver handicrafts.
Enjoy a guided visit to the central souk where you will find ornamental silver and carved Omani khanjars (daggers). Your tour then continues to the famous round tower fort of Nizwa, which is an example of some the best fort architecture in Oman. Set amongst verdant date palms, the fort was a formidable bastion against the marauding forces that coveted Nizwa's abundant natural wealth and its strategic location at the crossroads of vital caravan routes. A long line of imams of the Yaaruba dynasty held sway from its majestic ramparts, presiding over an era of great cultural, religious and educational enrichment.
Afterwards, you will visit Al Hamra one of the oldest villages in Oman. The mud houses date back over 400 years and still remain occupied. Here you will also visit the Al Hamra Falaj system as well as the Al Hoota caves, one of the largest natural caves before continuing to Bahla. Once famous for its black magic, today it is renowned for its Arabian Potteries and there will be a chance to visit one of the pottery workshops.
Your tour concludes with a visit to Jabreen castle, built in the 17th century. There is no other fort or castle in Oman boasting of the magnificence and splendour of Jabreen. The plasterwork, wooden carvings, painted ceiling makes this castle amazingly different.
