After leaving Reykjavik the first stop on this tour is Thingvellir, where the Icelandic parliament was first established in 930 AD, making it the oldest known functioning parliament in the world. Thingvellir is now a UNESCO world heritage listed site and is of historical, cultural and geological importance as it marks the spot where the American and European tectonic plates meet, and these continents are gradually drifting apart.
The tour carries on along mountain tracks towards the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, before viewing Geysir and Strokkur – hot springs erupting from below the Earth’s crust. Geysir is thought to be the oldest known geyser and one of the best examples of this phenomenon in the world.
You then get even closer to nature as you jump aboard a snow mobile and head onto Iceland’s second largest glacier for a 1 hour tour (note: valid driver’s is essential for driving snow mobile).
On the way back to Reykjavik you will visit the horticultural ‘green house’ town of Hveragerdi where you will learn how geothermal energy has been harnessed, and drive over a beautiful mountain heath back to the capital.
