Your day starts with a visit to the fishing village of Taqa, famed for its sardines. Here you will see the Taqa Castle, an old town with an interesting castle surrounded by watchtowers and Taqa stone houses. Proceed onward to Khor Rori creek, the site of the ruined city of Samhuram. The city was renowned as the capital of ancient Arabia’s frankincense trade with trade links by sea to Far Eastern destinations and even with distant Greece.
You will see the remains of Queen Sheba's Palace on top of a small hill overlooking the Khor Rawri. Continue to Mirbat, the ancient capital of Dhofar. An important town as early as the 9th century for it’s trade in frankincense, horses and slaves. A walk around the town reveals Mirbat Castle overlooking the sea and a variety of beautiful old merchant houses with their renowned carved doors and windows. The tour concludes with a visit to one of Dhofar’s best-known historic sites, Bin Ali’s Tomb. The twin domed structure; tomb of Mohamed bin Ali who died in 1135 AD is a fine example of medieval architecture.
