Overview
This experience encompasses many aspects of local Chiang Mai life – Elephants, the river and the traditional tribes that call this area home. Your day starts with a visit to the fascinating Chiang Dao Elephant Camp. Found in a scenic setting on the banks of the River Ping around 40 miles from Chiang Mai, the Elephant camp is home to large numbers of these amazing animals. Watch the elephants take their daily bath and perform amazing feats of skill and strength on the command of their carer or ‘mahouts’. Then follows an exciting 90 minute elephant trek passing through bamboo trees and hanging creepers on an upward journey to a remote Lisu hill tribe village where the tour stops for a traditional lunch. From here, the tour heads back to the River Ping for a relaxing hour-long bamboo rafting trip followed by visits to the hill tribe villages of Chiang Dao, including the fascinating long-necked Karen tribe who’s erect posture is due to the heavy brass rings worn around their necks from an early age. No one quite knows the reason or the origins of the custom but it has been an accepted practice and tradition for many centuries. If time permits, you may also visit other nearby hill tribe villages like, Akha and Lahu, before visiting a fascinating orchid farm at Mae Sa on your return to Chiang Mai.
