El Escorial is a spectacular World Heritage site built by Phillip II to commemorate the Battle of San Quintin and also as a mausoleum for Charles V. This immense palace, monastery, museum, and library dominates the landscape and is a symbol of Spanish power in the sixteenth Century. The balance and symmetry of the architecture is true to the humanist Renaissance style and the interior is adorned with paintings and frescoes. Accompanied by your experienced guide, explore the Palace, Pantheons of Kings and Infants, Chapters Rooms and the Basilica.
Situated just six miles from El Escorial is the Valley of the Fallen, built by General Franco to remember those that died in the Spanish Civil War. The vast basilica is excavated from the inside of a mountain above which sits an enormous 150 metre high cross that is visible from over thirty miles away. Here you can explore the stunning interior of the basilica and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Madrid mountain range.
