This fascinating tour introduces you to the wealth of ancient temples that can be found in Chiang Rai and includes guided visits to three of her most fascinating and renowned sites. The tour starts with a visit to the main market area in Chiang Rai, before heading to the Temple of Wat Phra Kaew. Chiang Rai's Temple of the Emerald Buddha is a must see for everyone. Built in the 12th century during the Lanna Empire it was here that the famed Emerald Buddha was discovered. This has since been taken to Bangkok but a replica was made and placed in the same spot where the original was found. The tour then continues to the Temple of Wat Doi Thong which overlooks the Mae Kok River from its perch on a hill at the site along the river known as the Navel Pillar. You will also visit King Meng Rai’s Monument and before ending your tour at the Temple of Wat Rong Khun. Also known as ‘The White Temple’ here you will find murals and paintings of the Buddha image and a painted enamel ceramic floor. The outside of the temple is created from lime sculpture Thai designs decorated with small pieces of mirror that make the building sparkle and shine under the sunlight.
