Overview

A great option for those looking to explore beyond Athens, this leisurely afternoon tour combines dramatic coastal scenery, picture postcard vistas of the Aegean and the chance to view the famous Temple of Poseidon (God of the Sea) which stands atop sheer cliffs that tumble into the Aegean. Your tour begins with a drive along the coastal road with its spectacular views of the Saronic Gulf, past the wonderful beaches of Glyfada, c and Varkiza as well as countless caves. Ensure you have your camera at the ready as there are magnificent views at every turn. The undoubted highlight of the trip is the visit to the Temple of Poseidon which remains perched on its rocky outcrop, a landmark for mariners from ancient times to today. The temple dates from 44 B.C and many of its original Doric columns are still standing. Lord Byron carved his name in the marble of one of the columns in 1810 and set an unfortunate precedent for graffiti at the temple, which is now covered in scrawled signatures and initials.  As you view the temple, also marvel at the panoramic view across the Aegean which extends all the way to Kea and the Peloponnese on a clear day.
