At the very top of the South Island, the golden arc of Farewell Spit reaches 2km across and up to 30km in length, separating the Tasman Sea and Golden Bay. It is home to a wetland of international importance, is a breeding ground for penguins, offers amazing scenery for visitors to its cliffs and beaches, and the radar station and lighthouse will provide you with some fascinating historical knowledge.
Your passionate guide takes you along the shores of this giant sand bar in search of some of the 90 different species of bird that are found here- bar tailed godwits, knots, curlews, whimbrels, turnstones. Migratory waders from the Northern Hemisphere head south to Farewell Spit for the summer months making this a haven for bird lovers and you will also often see penguins and seals.
