Your day starts with a short drive to Alkmaar, where you visit the historic cheese market. You can get a real sense of ancient market life as you watch the cheese carriers in their traditional dress piling their wheels of cheese on the cobblestone square at Alkmaar Market. The bidding process still follows old tradition with hand clapping followed by a stern clap the deal is sealed. Once the buyer is successful, the cheese is taken to a 14th century Weigh House to tally the bill.  After exploring the market, the tour heads to the village Schermerhorn with its famous old windmills. These amazing structures date from the 17th Century and are part of a series of windmills, set at different elevations, which drained the land of water. Your return journey to Amsterdam takes you to the medieval village of Edam to visit a cheese factory where this world famous cheese is still made using traditional techniques.
