It was no surprise that The Lord of the Rings was filmed in New Zealand for the country is a natural motion picture studio full of fantastic special effects.  The three main islands (North, South and Stewart Island) offer you a succession of magical scenes: endless empty beaches, stupendous mountain ranges, mirror-like lakes, silvery waterfalls, dizzying fjords, tranquil Sounds, limestone caverns, hot geysers and icy glaciers. 

Equally fabulous is the wild-life, much of it unique to New Zealand: the iconic kiwi, the spiny tuatara, the emerald kea and the elusive morepork owl, as well as a Noah’s Ark of penguins, albatrosses, black swans, sea lions and breaching whales.  And from temperate rain forest to sub-tropical bush, the flora are as exotic as the fauna.

What is more, the natural enchantment is matched by the rich diversity of man-made adventure.  For this is the realm of the adrenalin sport!  It’s the home of the bungy jump!  It’s the dominion of the tandem skydive!  Of course, you don’t have to go in for thrills and spills.  You can voyage across the glorious Bay of Islands, explore the glow-worm-lit Waitomo Caves, trek through the stunning Abel Tasman National Park, experience the joys of Queenstown, or take a ferry ride across the Foveaux Strait to pristine Stewart Island, the “land of the glowing skies”.  You can also discover something of the colourful history and the Maori culture in the “Land of the Long White Cloud”.

But if you really want to do something different, the South Pacific paradise is a must.  You can go flightseeing by balloon or helicopter – or even hang-glider.  For a bare-knuckle experience, you can white-water raft on the Shotover river.  You can whale watch, swim with dolphins, scuba dive in crystal waters.  You can have wildlife encounters and go on adventure tours of all sorts.  You can traverse the spectacular wonderland of thermal springs, spouting geysers and volcanic lakes in Rotorua.  And after the excitement you can stimulate your taste buds on a fine wine tour and or sample the delicious local cuisine in Nelson.
